The Moment Everything Changed
Since moving to Germany in 2013, I've routinely visited Audi's job portal. It was once a showcase of opportunity across engineering, R&D, manufacturing, and innovation. In all those years, I had never seen fewer than 200+ job opportunities, and those were spread across various countries. But what I saw on August 7, 2025, was jarring.
Just 49 open positions. And only for Germany.
41 internships
7 traineeships
1 professional role (a position for a doctor)
No engineering jobs. No product development. No software, no manufacturing. Just internships and entry programs.
This isn't a slowdown. It's a signal. A message from one of Germany's most prestigious OEMs that the industry is in a holding pattern.


Where the Jobs (Aren't)
The internships span nearly every major department:
Production & Manufacturing: Quality control, materials, assembly process optimization
R&D & Engineering: AI analysis, vehicle architecture, powertrain systems
Business Functions: HR, pricing, supply chain, controlling, sales
Even future critical domains like artificial intelligence and digitalization are offering only internships. No permanent roles, no long-term hires.
This clearly isn't about lack of skills or funding in a specific department. It's a systemic freeze.

Why This Matters
This shift has implications beyond just Audi.
For Students:
Internships are now the main entry path, but without job security or clear growth. You may complete one only to reapply for another.
For Professionals:
Mid- and senior-level roles are nearly absent. Switching companies or re-entering the field is tougher than ever.
For Career Changers:
With no professional openings, breaking into automotive from adjacent industries is nearly impossible right now.

What's Causing This Hiring Freeze?
The reasons are structural and global:
🔋 EV market uncertainty - Will demand match investments?
🤖 Lack of Innovation & Delays in software-defined vehicles (SDVs)
🇨🇳 Pressure from Chinese EV brands
🗳️ Unclear political direction within the EU
💼 Cautious restructuring at legacy OEMs
Audi may be the example today, but this is happening across the automotive landscape. Suppliers, startups, and even Tier 1s are cutting back or stalling hiring.
What Needs to Happen for Change
Several critical shifts must occur for automotive hiring to recover:
EV Pricing Must Improve
Current EV prices remain a barrier to mass adoption. Until costs come down significantly, demand uncertainty will persist as people will prefer Chinese EVs.
Charging Infrastructure Economics
Working with CPOs (Charge Point Operators) in Germany and energy providers to reduce charging prices is essential. High charging costs are a major hurdle preventing EV adoption.
Consumer Education
There's a knowledge gap creating polarized opinions. People either love EVs completely or stick to ICE engines, mostly due to lack of proper information transfer about the technology.
Organizational Flexibility
Less bureaucracy and more flexibility is required at these giant OEMs. Too often, internal approval processes and middle management layers slow down innovation when speed is critical.
Strategic Cost Optimization
This reality may mean relocating some resources to different countries where operational costs are lower, though this brings its own challenges for German employment.
How to Navigate This Moment
If you're in the automotive industry or hoping to enter, here's what I recommend:
For Current Professionals
Expand skills to adjacent areas like charging infrastructure or energy systems
Consider consulting/freelancing (flexible work is in demand)
Build visibility via LinkedIn, industry events, and side projects
For Students & Recent Grads
Treat internships seriously (they are the main entry gate right now)
Set timelines for growth; don't get stuck in internship cycles
Build hybrid skills (automotive + software, or EV + energy)
For Career Changers
Look at adjacent industries that serve mobility (logistics tech, charging)
Position your existing skills as solutions to EV challenges
Get familiar with EV fundamentals and future trends (online courses, volunteer projects, bootcamps)
Final Thoughts: The Giant Is Sleeping, Not Dead
I came to Germany to be part of something bold. To work in one of the world's most admired engineering industries. I'm incredibly grateful for what I've learned and contributed.
But seeing Audi's job portal reduced to internships is personal. It's not just about jobs. It's about the fading signal of industrial momentum.
Still, I believe the giant will awaken. The need for mobility, sustainability, and innovation hasn't disappeared. It's just undergoing the most painful transformation in its history.
When that moment comes, the industry will need talent ready to build the future, not the past.
