I tracked the sales of BYD’s "Megawatt Class" EVs since their launch. The trend isn't a straight line up. It is a reality check of the Chinese market.

I plotted the sales of the Han L and Tang L, the only two cars I know currently capable of using BYD’s Megawatt Flash Charging. In the past, I compiled their megawatt charging sessions side by side, where you can see them charging with 1001 kW and 1002 kW peaks respectively.

The technology is real, but the sales story is different.

As you can see in the chart below, sales are fluctuating. When you look at the Han L and Tang L as a percentage of BYD's total monthly sales in China, the picture gets clearer:

  • Peak: ~1.5% of total volume

  • Current: Fluctuating between 0.5% - 0.9%

This volatility shows that even the premium products aren't safe. BYD is offering 15,000 CNY trade in deals on their website for these relatively new models. I believe this explains the 15,000 CNY price drops available at dealerships. Dealers are simply integrating this official offer to keep the metal moving.

We are witnessing the "Involution" and deflation cycle in China. In November 2025, I wrote a detailed article explaining how this started and why prices are falling across all sectors. Between 2023 and H1 2025, BYD slashed prices by ~32%. Nobody is safe.

The Infrastructure Paradox

While car sales fluctuate, BYD’s megawatt infrastructure ambition is increasing:

Why build 15,000 megawatt chargers if the car sales are fluctuating?

I believe this isn't just about selling cars in China anymore. BYD is "all in" on the technology. They see massive potential in exports, which is the only escape from local deflation pressure.

The Export Strategy

China is the place to collect data and understand this at scale. It is already announced that BYD plans to install charging infrastructure in the EU in 2026. I think the current domestic rollout is there to perfect the technology before deploying it at scale in Europe.

That means they aren't just exporting the EVs. They are exporting the solution for production cars with megawatt charging capability.

Usually in EU, we only know of Tesla as player, who is producing EVs and EV infrastructure as well. Nio is another example but I won’t really count them in EU, as they weren’t successful with EV sales and their swap stations. So it will be interesting to see a new giant entering EU, who cannot just produce cars, megawatt charging stations, but also has specialties in battery manufacturing as well.

Why I Am Sharing This Now

Last week, with the limited information I had, I wrote an article on how this BYD flash charger works. Thanks to people aware of Chinese eMobility, I was informed about some things I missed, and I even received direct feedback from the BYD team, which I appreciate.

Over the past few days, I have dug deeper in breaking down their charging infrastructure. Stay tuned, as tomorrow I will publish my next newsletter explaining the technology behind their Gen I and Gen II megawatt flash charging.

What do you think: Is the infrastructure expansion a reaction to domestic demand, or a prep for export?
